Halloween is a great opportunity to have some fun in math while the children still do worthwhile activities!   Halloween and math make a great partnership! I doubt that there is any other theme that will motivate as much a Halloween will!         There are loads of simple games and ideas that you can use that will combine math and Halloween! These simple Tic Tac Toe games are soooooo easy to create! You just need some plastic spiders or bats and a grid drawn on paper!        These math challenges are easy to create too! We used the poster above for 2 different activities. 1. Find as many combinations of 2 or 3 numbers that add to 31 (for October 31 of course)! 2. Find sets of 3 numbers where 2 of the numbers add to the third number! Find as many as possible for each! Winner is the person with the most! Halloween Writing Prompts!

Image
Halloween is a fantastic motivator for getting kids to write! That's why I have created a few things that you can use to get kids enthusiastic about writing this Halloween.               They can write spooky stories, recipes for witch's brews, safety hints for trick or treating, list ideas for Halloween parties or even facts and opinions about Halloween! Sometimes all they need is a sentence starter to get their imaginations firing!  Halloween Writing Quilt If you would like to get kids writing and creating an interesting display of their writing, then you will love the Halloween Writing Quilt Squares. Their are 7 quilt squares to choose from and can you use them all or use just one. The children do the writing activity on the sheet then color the small quilt squares. They then cut out the large square and these can be displayed with their classmates' squares to make a large Halloween Quilt display with their writing and ...

Equation Maker Games

Image
I call these games Equation Maker games.     I have used these for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They are really simple to draw up if you want to make your own or I have some premade ones available in my Math Board Games sets.   To make an addition one, you just need to draw 3 blocks then add the addition sign and equals sign. Put in the numbers that could make addition equations and it is ready to play.   The players make equations by covering one number in each set on a turn, e.g. 3+9=12. As there are fewer and fewer numbers, it becomes more and more challenging until the winner is the last one who can make an equation. These are simple to make but also a great challenge for the kids to play!   Here is an addition version.    This one is for subtraction.   This also works for multiplication!   This is one for division.      You can also make th...

Sight Word Games

Image
Let's make learning sight words fun with some games! Children need to experience sight words in a variety of situations. So I created some games that will give children a fun way to practice sight words. These games started like this.   In this game, the players roll the dice and find a circle with the number on the dice. If they can read the word, they cover the circle. The player who covers the last circle is the winner. For the Tic Tac Toe game, the players read a word and cover it with a counter. The game is played just like Tic Tac Toe but if you can't read the word, you can't cover the space!   Of course these games are very simple to draw up on paper if you want to try them or you might like what I have created. These games work so well that they quickly evolved into 5 sets of games that look like this -   I have used the Dolch sight words for the games and there are 5 sets - Pre-Primer Primer First Grade Second Grade Third Grade.   There are 8 color...
